AJH 7TH GRADE CLIPS CLINTON, 8-6
Big plays late in a game between two evenly matched teams once again proved to be the difference in the outcome. Clinton and Altus both made big plays late in the game. However, Altus was able to get a conversion to take a hard fought 8-6 victory Tuesday night at Hightower Memorial Stadium.
Altus received the opening kickoff and took the whole first quarter for their first drive. Two plays into the second quarter the drive stalled and the Red Tornadoes took over. After one big play around the left side of the Altus defense, the Dawgs stiffened and the teams went into the half tied at 0.
After a scoreless third quarter it was just a matter of who could break the defense first. Clinton was able to do that with 5:39 left in the game as the halfback went around the right side of the line for a 23-yard touchdown. The conversion was stuffed and Clinton led 6-0.
Clinton kicked off and it went to Chehemu Morgan II, who went around the right side of the blockers and then raced 55 yards for a touchdown. Luke Clothier ran in the conversion and Altus led 8-6 with 5:21 remaining.
The Dawg defense had to come up big one more time. Clinton drove to inside the Dawg 10 yard line with less than two minutes remaining. On fourth and goal from the two yard line, Clinton tried to toss it to the left side of the Altus defense. Linebacker Raul Facundo stuffed the running back, and Altus took over possession. The 7th grade AJH Dawgs ran out the clock to preserve the tough 8-6 victory.
Facundo, Riley Barrington, Dylan Davis, Laethon Patterson and Ryan Rogers led the Altus defense.
The offense was paced by Morgan who had 46 yards on six carries and the kickoff return for a touchdown.
Altus (6-1) will wrap up their season next Tuesday when they travel to Anadarko.
CLINTON HANDS 8TH GRADE DAWGS TOUGH 14-8 DEFEAT
Two early miscues spelled doom for the 8th grade Altus Junior High Dawgs in their contest with the Clinton Red Tornadoes. Two fumbles accounted for two scores. A late Altus drive stalled at the Clinton 20 as the Red Tornadoes defeated the Dawgs 14-8.
Clinton got on the board with four minutes left in the first quarter after a Dawg fumble. Starting at their own 20, Clinton went up the middle for a score. The extra point was blocked and Clinton led 6-0 heading into the second quarter.
Another Altus fumble gave the Red Tornadoes excellent field position again. Four plays later they went up the middle for a 12-yard score. The conversion was good and Clinton went into the half up 14-0.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Dawgs were finally able to push the ball into the end zone when quarterback Dylan McGill hit fullback Cabe Dickerson for an eight-yard touchdown pass. Hunter Webb ran in the conversion and Altus trailed 14-8.
The Altus defense came up with a big stop on the next drive. Altus had the ball with 2:00 left in the game.
Altus drove all the way to the Clinton 20 yard line. Time ran out on the Dawgs, and with five seconds left, Clinton took over the ball and ran the clock down to preserve the victory.
Dickerson, Webb, Caleb Leyja, Deondre Martinez and Kale Gallagher led the Dawg defense.
Webb led the Dawg rushing attack with 143 yards on 14 carries while Dickerson had 52 yards on 11 carries.
Altus (5-2) will try to end their season with a victory next Tuesday when they travel to Anadarko.
