Alan Ortiz is dominating his cross country competition this season. At the cross country meet held at the soccer fields north of Altus on Tuesday, Ortiz appeared to run alone.
As he made his final turn down the side of a hill heading west Ortiz had an easy lead of at least a minute and a half on the second place runner. Sometimes we forget how much distance that actually is, but stop and count how long a minute and 41 seconds is in terms of running. It is clear that Ortiz won a one man race.
This is in no way intended to offend any of his teammates. Ryan Oden came in third place with an 18 minute 5K. That is a minute and 47 seconds behind Ortiz’ 16.13 effort.
Josh Baker and Jessie Benitez ran together in fifth and sixth place respectively. Adrian Aviles, Stephen Dwyer, Alan Palestino, Jesus Castro and Trevor Busby also took home medals for the Bulldogs as they finish in order in the ninth, 11th, 13th, 16th and 17th positions.
The Bulldog boys team won their home meet. The girls placed second as a team with seven runners taking home medals.
Grace Hernke again led the way for the Lady Bulldogs in second place with a time of 15.11 in the 2-mile.
The rest of the Lady Bulldogs who took home medals were Olga Lopez in fifth, Malea Gonzalez in 10th, Hadley David in 11th, Itzell Florez in 13th, Rachel Dowell in 23rd, and Ilda Lopez in 24th place.
The next action for these AHS runners will be Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Norman Regionals. It will be held at the Irving Middle School. Girls run at noon and boys will follow at 12:45.
The top 7 teams will then qualify for State.
