The Altus High School Bulldogs will face a tough test on Friday. They will travel to Cameron Stadium in Lawton to battle the MacArthur High School Highlanders.

Mac will be in the spread again this year. There is no need to stray away from what earned the Highlanders the state championship last year. However, this year’s version of the spread looks a little different than it has in the past.

Mac likes to run the ball out of the spread this season. As a matter of fact, they like to run it twice as much. Perhaps that is because Mac has had leads in each of their games. They try to choke the clock out on their opponents.

We haven’t seen them in distress when playing from behind on the scoreboard. The reason they probably like to run the ball is because of a change of quarterback. The quarterback at the beginning of the season was Anthony Love. Love was a cool 13 of 16 for 193 yards and three touchdowns against Clinton to open the season.

Love then opened the Lawton High game going four of six for 192 and one touchdown. Love also ran nine times for 33 yards.

Since then, it has been JR Winningham at the quarterback spot. Their coaches don’t like to discuss injuries, so it is unclear why the change was made. It is unknown if or when Love will return. The situation is at the core of whether or not Mac will trust their passing game or favor the run.

They sure have a back they trust. Teddy Thomas, a 5’ 6” 170 pound junior, is a workhorse for Mac. Not even considering the stats from the Northwest Classen win last week, Thomas has carried the ball 103 times in the other three wins. Those wins came against Clinton, Lawton High and Ike.

Against Ike, the Highlanders gave the ball to Thomas the entire second half. He took advantage of an Ike defense that played soft against the run. Thomas had 40 carries for 296 yards and four touchdowns.

Thomas is not the only concern for the Bulldogs. Mac again has a complete set of skill position players. Jarviear Christon is a scoring threat from anywhere on the field. Christon is very explosive and seems to have a gear that other opponents do not have. Christon has returned three kickoffs for touchdowns already and also has three receiving scores.

The Bulldogs will face some very fast feet come Friday.

GO BULLDOGS!!
