It took the Altus Junior High 8th grade offense a little while to get on track, but once it did, it put on a show. The Dawgs defeated the Lawton Mac Scots 44-26, in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated.

Lawton Mac opened the game with a spread offense that caused a few problems for the Dawg Defense but the defense held and Altus took over and drove down the field.

Altus scored with 1:10 left in the first quarter when quarterback Dylan McGill made a perfect pitch as he was getting hit. Slotback D’Marco Delapaz ran it the final five yards for the score and Altus led 6-0 heading into the second frame.

It didn’t take Mac long to knot the score in the second quarter as the Mac quarterback went around the right side of the Dawg defense for a 65 yard score. The conversion failed and the score was tied at six.

Altus drove it right back down the field with this drive capped off by fullback Hunter Webb. Webb went around the right side for a nine yard score. The conversion failed and Altus led 12-6.

After forcing a Mac turnover the Dawgs had 1:17 left before the half to get to pay dirt. With 14 seconds left McGill hit Mysean Wells, who made a great catch over the Mac defender for a 22 yard touchdown pass. The conversion failed and Altus went into the half up 18-6.

Disaster struck for Altus on their first play in the third quarter. McGill was hit as he released the ball and a Mac defender intercepted the ball and ran it 48 yards for a score. The Mac conversion was good and the score was 18-14.

Altus answered right back as McGill had a big 20 yard run that was followed by a Webb 18 yard touchdown run. Webb ran in the conversion and Altus was up 26-14.

Altus’ noseguard Ayden Lesley made the next big play, recovering a Mac fumble. A few plays later, Webb went around the right side of the line for a 28 yard touchdown run. The conversion failed and Altus led 32-14 heading into the final quarter.

Altus would strike first in the fourth period when fullback Cabe Dickerson went around the right side for a five yard touchdown run. The conversion failed and Altus led 38-14 with 6:09 left in the game.

Mac added a score with 4:01 left on a 22 yard pass to cut the Altus lead to 38-20. Altus drove right back down and with 1:21 left. Slotback Brennen Clements went around the left side of the line for a five yard touchdown. Clements missed the extra point attempt to push the Dawg advantage to 44-20.

Mac added a late score to make the final 44-26.

The defense was led by Dickerson, Webb, Lesley, JoJo Buxton and Caleb Leyja.

The fullbacks for Altus had big days as Webb had 140 yards rushing on 10 carries while Dickerson added 97 yards on 10 carries.

Altus (3-0) will host Lawton Central next week.
