Team titles for AHS boys and AJH girls at Cameron meet

LAWTON – The Altus High School boys and Altus Junior High girls took the team championships at the Cameron University Cross Country Invitational meet that was held Saturday morning.

Alan Ortiz won his second meet in a row taking the individual title in the 5K run with a time of 16:15. Ryan Oden (17:26) was 4th and Josh Baker (18:14) was 7th for the Bulldogs. Jessie Benitez (18:30) was 11th while Stephen Dwyer (18:53) was 16th to round out the scorers for the Bulldogs.

Altus scored 31 points followed by Oklahoma Christian School, Marlow, Velma-Alma and Walters.

The Altus High Women’s team finished third overall with Gracie Hernke (14:41) finishing 15th to lead the Lady Bulldogs in the two mile run. Olga Lopez (14:53) finished 16th, Hadley David (15:10) was 19th, Chauncey Beckner (16:06) was 24th and Itzel Flores (16:08) was 25th to round out the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs.

Marlow took the team title with 31 points while Velma was next with 33 points. Altus, Lawton High, Carnegie and Hobart rounded out the team scoring.

The Altus Junior High girls took the top four spots and five of the top eight spots to claim the team title. Beth Garrison ran the mile course in 6:09 to take the individual championship but she was followed closely by Cayden Beckner (6:10). Sarah Scott (6:14) was third and Riley Borrego (6:16) was fourth. Gracye Gilliam (6:38) finished 8th to round out the point scorers for the Lady Dawgs.

“Those top four broke away from the pack at the start and never looked back,” said coach Karla Drury. “They pushed each other all the way to the finish.”

Altus scored 18 points while Marlow was runner-up with 62. Carnegie, Bray-Doyle, Walters, Waurika and O.C.S. rounded out the team scoring in the 71 runner field.

The Altus Junior High boys finished fourth overall with Moses McCaskill leading the way with a 4th place finish (5:51) in the mile run. Calvin Wagoner (5:59) was 8th. Macel Canterbury was 32nd, Adam was 34th and Braden Lollis was 43 to round out the scorers for Altus.

Next action for the High School will be next Friday when they travel to Norman for the Norman Runner Classic. The Junior High will participate at Cache on Sept. 26.
