DUNCAN – Altus Bulldog senior, Alan Ortiz, picked up the start of his senior season just like he finished his junior year, right at the front of the pack. The cross country teams opened their season in Duncan on Saturday and came away with several top finishes.

Out of 145 runners participating in the high school boys 5k division, Ortiz finished in first place with a time of 17.32. Ryan Oden was 12th with a 19.03, and Josh Baker also earned a medal finishing 16th with a time of 19.12. The top 20 places earned medals. The boys’ team finished fourth in the team standings behind first place Plainview, followed by McGuiness and Cache.

The top finisher for the Altus High Schoolgirls was Grace Hernke in 18th place, running a time of 24.11. All six girls running for AHS finished between 18th and 29th, helping the ladies earn a fourth place finish in the team standings. McGuiness won the girls division, followed by Elgin and Duncan. There were 85 girls running in the high school division.

The Altus Junior High Girls Cross Country team opened up their season in fine fashion by winning the Duncan Invitational Cross Country Meet on Saturday.

The top five runners for Altus placed in the top nine out of the 82 runners in the field.

Beth Garrison finished a team high third with a time of 10:06 in the 2400 Run. Sarah Scott was fourth with a time of 10:16, while Cayden Beckner was sixth with a time of 10:22. Riley Borrego was seventh with 10:36, and Gracie Gilliam added a ninth place finish with a time of 10:58.

Altus finished with 29 points. Comanche was second with 71. Velma-Alma, Cache, Elgin, Waurika, Healdton and Duncan rounded out the rest of the team scoring.

“The girls ran a great race to open the season,” said Coach Karla Drury. “They ran together in a pack and didn’t separate until the end.”

In the boys division, Altus placed fourth. Duncan won the meet, followed by Waurika and Cache.

Moses McCaskill led the Dawgs with a 17th place finish in the 3200 Run. Calvin Wagoner was 31st, and Macel Caterbury was 33rd.
