Baylor Feller gets to the Vernon QB during last year’s contest.

It’s finally here. People it is G A M E D A Y for our boys in blue as they head south and battle it out against Vernon, Texas in what will be a heated rivalry game.

The contest will begin at 7:30 p.m., and I can’t think of any good reason to miss it. Vernon was passed by Graham last week 42-7. It’s easy to get caught up in assuming Vernon is weak this year. That is what we call a “TRAP” game.

We aren’t very familiar with Graham, so we dismiss the route as Vernon being down this year. However, Graham has compiled a 39-5 record over the past three seasons, and claimed Region Championships each of those years. Maxpreps.com currently has them the #394 ranked team in the nation, and the #49 ranked team in Texas.

Vernon is ranked by maxpreps at #3033 nationally and #335 in Texas. By comparison, the Bulldogs come in at #2561 nationally and #48 in Oklahoma.

My point is, Vernon should not be judged by last week’s performance versus Graham. Apparently, Graham is on a whole different level. That loss last week probably just made Vernon really mad, and they will be looking to take it out on us out-of-staters.

Here is what I know of Vernon: Vernon has 33 kids listed on the roster. Of those, 21 kids are seniors. Their starting quarterback was 1-7 on passing attempts before the backup came in, and he was 2-3 with a touchdown pass. Combined, the two quarterbacks threw for 67 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

They managed just 93 yards, rushing on 26 carries for a 3.6 average. One highlight for the Lions was the punter who averaged 45 yards on six punts. On defense, two Lions stood out. Seniors, Thomas Medina #27, and Chaz Smith #10, each had 12 solo tackles.

Again, those are just a few details of Vernon’s loss last week to Graham, which should be completely ignored by the Bulldogs as they mentally prepare for Graham.

Let’s go Bulldogs! Don’t fall into the trap of overlooking this rival. This is the border battle towards next week’s showdown against Anadarko in the homecoming home opener. But – there is business to handle tonight first.

GO BULLDOGS !!
