AJH-7th HOLDS ON LATE 24-22
LAWTON – The Altus Junior High 7th grade Dawgs opened their season with a thrilling 24-22 victory over the Lawton Eisenhower Vikings on Tuesday night.
After forcing the Vikings to punt on their first drive, the Dawgs took over on their own 15 yard line. Two plays later slot back, Chehemu Morgan II, took the pitch around the left side of the line and ran 75 yards for a score. Quarterback Raul Facundo hit Laethon Patterson for a two point conversion pass, and the Dawgs led 8-0 heading into the second quarter.
Ike came right back and scored on a 50 yard run to open the second quarter. The conversion failed, and Altus led 8-6.
Altus scored on their first series in the second quarter when Facundo hit Morgan for an 80 yard touchdown pass. Facundo ran in the conversion and Altus led 16-6. Altus had another chance to score before the half, but ran out of time on the one yard line.
Ike stiffened up their defense in the third quarter. The Vikings were able to score with 55 seconds left in the third quarter. The conversion was good, and Altus led 16-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
Altus struck pay dirt again with four minutes to go as Morgan took a pitch around the left side again, and raced 48 yards for the score. Facundo ran the conversion in and Altus led 24-14.
Disaster struck on the ensuing kickoff as the Ike returner brought it back to the Dawg 25 yard line, and a 15 yard penalty was tacked on, to give Ike the ball at the Altus 10 yard line. Ike took one play to score and got the conversion to close within 24-22.
Altus’ offense tried to run out the clock, but could only drive to the Ike 45 yard line before giving it up on downs. Ike had 30 seconds and one last shot. A long pass from the Ike QB was tipped by a Dawg defender and landed into the hands of an Ike receiver who bolted to the goal-line. Morgan was able to drag him down at the two yard line. Ike quickly got down and set up a QB sneak, but the Dawg defense stuffed him backwards and time expired to give Altus the victory.
Morgan led the offensive attack with 90 yards on five carries, while Facundo added 34 yards on nine carries.
Patterson, Jace James, Morgan and Branson Ford led the defense.
The Dawgs will travel to Elk City next Tuesday for more football action.
