Telling the stories of World War I at Altus Public Library

The Southern Prairie Library System and the Museum of the Western Prairie will present an evening program of stories, slides, maps, and artifact facsimiles telling the stories of World War One on Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Altus Public Library, 421 N. Hudson. August 2014 marks the 100th year observance of the start of hostilities that lasted for four years and cost countless lives.

Neon sign said cause of fire

The Altus Fire Department responded to a call Friday afternoon of smoke and possible fire at Fred’s Restaurant on N. Main in Altus. Employees and patrons were removed from the building as crews quickly contained the fire. According to firefighters, a neon sign caught a section of the soffit ablaze. The fire was quickly contained with minimal damage, and the fire did not get inside the restaurant. The restaurant later re-opened for business.

Subjects reportedly shot at each other from cars

Altus Police are investigating another overnight shots fired call. According to Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy, police responded to the 400 block of W. Broadway at around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
