Members of the Western Library Club of Western Oklahoma State College, with Marcia Streater and Janice Tice of Little School Learning Center, tied blue ribbons around a set of trees out front of WOSC on Wednesday March, 27, for Child Abuse Prevention Month this April. The Club is also donating books to the Little School Learning Center.
WLC President MaryAnn Callaway informed that the Blue Ribbon Trees were decorated with 202 blue ribbons to represent the number of substantiated child abuse and neglect cases in Jackson County from 2010 to 2012, according to the Department of Human Services Office. Jackson, Tillman, Harmon, Greer, and Kiowa counties collectively have 412 cases of substantiated child abuse or neglect from 2010 to 2012.
The Western Library club gets involved with community projects like reading to elementary schools in the area and volunteering at local nursing homes. Recently the Club made over 100 valentines and gave them out at the English Village Manor in Altus, Callaway explained.
The Club began during the 2012-2013 school year, and currently has eight members. Callaway hopes the club will grow and have more community projects in the future.
