Mission on Wheels (MOW) is having a summer full of events, thanks to the many volunteers who help Edna Douglas keep the mission up and running. They just completed their first bake sale to generate funds for fans for the elderly. The sale went so well with an excellent turnout, they sold out of baked goods early. An extra big thank you from Douglas to all who donated goods and funds, and for those who made purchases. You made it possible to raise funds to buy 17 fans. Thanks to Wal-Mart for giving MOW a reduced price (the same as an out-of-town competitor) of $13.88 per fan, instead of $15.88. Douglas said they will be giving those fans away to needy people 65 years and up. The fan distribution is set for Tuesday, July 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call her at 580-649-8620 to get on the list. If more funds come in, Douglas said they’d like to be able to give out 20 fans. If you’d like to donate to the fan project, please call Douglas.
At the Wednesday, June 27 clothes giveaway, participants were treated to a hot dog lunch provided by Heath and Randi Tucker. Heath is the pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church and Randi is his wife. The Tuckers brought youth from the church to volunteer at MOW. Many thanks to Friendship Baptist for sharing their team with the mission.
On July 23, Mission on Wheels will hold another bake sale to raise funds and to collect school supplies for the annual backpack project. Those supplies and backpacks will be given out in a Back-to-School distribution in August.
In September, “when things cool down a bit,” Douglas said, MOW has planned a children’s fashion show for fall clothing items for the younger set.
