
Getting their costumes ready to represent the Habitat for Humanity Altus Area organization at the “Grate” Altus Spelling Bee on Saturday are (l to r) Lynne Collingwood, Marie Law, and Gayla Smith. Their spelling team will be called “Habitat Hammers”, and they wanted their costume and name to portray their organization’s purpose. This team, along with 14 other teams, will participate at 9 am in the WOSC Band Room, next to the Herschal Crow Fine Arts Auditorium on the north part of the campus.

The “Grate” Altus Spelling Bee seems too good to “bee” true! No fooling! Come and see for yourself at 9 a.m., on Saturday, March 31, in the WOSC Band Room at Western Oklahoma State College. The contest raises funds for the Great Plains Literacy Council and will “bee” full of entertainment and fun as spelling teams participate in friendly competition.
The event has spelling teams composed of adults from clubs, organizations, churches, schools and the military. The fifteen teams who signed up include: Angry Words, Autocorrect, BEE Jays, Bee-ch Bums, BEEdlam Bees, Diacritical Divas, Fear the “Bee”ard – The James Harden Spellers, Flying “Bee”neath the Weather, Habitat Hammers, None of Your Bee’s Wax, Rescue Rangers, Spell Bound, Stockmans “Bee”-Boppers, Team Jesus, and Wanna Bees. With unique team names like these, the morning program will bound to be enjoyable as well as informative.
All teams will start with the preliminary rounds. Then the contest will advance to more difficult words. The United Supermarkets have donated a honey candy for all the team participants.
The Great Plains Literacy Council has collected “grate” prizes for the top teams in spelling, costumes, and team name. Door prizes will also be given. With no admission fee, they invite you to attend and watch the “Grate” Altus Spelling Bee that is too good to “bee” true!
