The Southern Prairie Library System and the Great Plains Literacy Council will sponsor an awareness meeting about the new “Dreamer” immigration directive on Thursday, Aug. 2. This has to do with eligible young people, brought to the United States as children, who can now be considered for relief from removal from the country and for work authorization. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the Altus Public Library, 421 N. Hudson.
Attorney Milissa Tipton-Dunkins, who primarily practices immigration law at Lawrence E. Davis, P.C., of Oklahoma City, will be the guest speaker. She will discuss who will be eligible for meeting the US Citizenship and Immigration Service expectations of those getting the deferred action and work permit application. She will give suggestions on what to do to get prepared for the application and its probable timelines.
Mrs. Tipton-Dunkins has a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice from Wichita State University and a Juris Doctorate from Oklahoma City University. She is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association and the Western District of Oklahoma. This guest speaker is a past president of the Oklahoma Association of Black Lawyers and is currently an active member. Mrs. Tipton-Dunkins is an active member of the American Immigration Law Association. She is currently the Oklahoma City Liaison for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Literacy Bi-lingual Facilitator Aleida Burchett will translate her message, if needed, into English or to translate any questions from Spanish.
