According to reports, Ornelas’ grandmother drove him to the home of his girlfriend’s parents to retrieve some belongs. The girlfriend’s father came out of the house and told Ornelas he was not welcome on the property. Ornelas reportedly came around the vehicle and stabbed the man in the stomach and then fled on foot.
Police scoured the area, searching houses and followed up on leads as to Ornelas’ whereabouts, but did not find him.
The victim was taken by Jackson County EMS to Jackson County Memorial Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. The victim’s small intestine was cut in half, his colon was pierced, and several blood vessels were cut. He is reported to be in stable condition today, but remains in ICU.
Ornelas turned himself in at the police station around midnight. He was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon in an attempt to kill.
Ornelas had been scheduled to appear in court in Frederick earlier that day, but did not show up.
Ornelas’ court appearance was over a recent incident in Frederick involving electrical meters. After Ornelas’ electricity had been turned off, he reportedly reconnected it himself. When Frederick city officials found the meter running, they took the meter off the house, but Ornelas reportedly took an electrical meter off another house and installed it on his own. He was arrested and released on bond. When he did not show up for the hearing Tuesday, his bond was revoked.
