It was good night for the Western Oklahoma State College Lady Pioneers who defeated Northern of Tonkawa 72-68 here on Monday night.

The Western men weren’t as fortunate losing to the Mavericks 79-77.

It was a close game but Cetoria Petties hit a free throw with 57 seconds remaining to give the Lady Pioneers (10-12) a 71-66 lead. Northern could not overcome that.

Petties led all scorers with 18 points . Sheronica Swindle finished with 12 points and Tatyana Bell had 10 points.

The Pioneers, who lost to Tonkawa 95-45 early in the year, gave the Mavericks all they wanted. Western had a chance to tie it or win it with a three-point shot. Leading 79-77 Tonkawa’s T.J. Thornton missed a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds to give Western that opportunity. The Pioneers rushed the ball up the court but turned the ball over.

Western (14-9) was led in scoring by Sterling Thomas who had 22 points. Jedarian Jackson had 21 points and Dii’jon Allen Jordan 18 points.

The Western teams will host Seminole on Wednesday. The women’s game tips off a t 6 p.m. and the men’s contest is slated for 8 p.m.
