Marie C. Guffy, 95, passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012. She was born Sept. 17, 1917, in Humphrey to James F. Claiborne and Esther A. Pottorff Claiborne. Marie graduated from Humphrey High School in 1936. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Oklahoma College for Women, Chickasha, in 1940. She continued her education at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where she received a Master’s Degree in Education in 1953. Marie married Luther Kenneth Guffy on Dec. 22, 1941 in Humphrey. Marie taught school for 40 years in Oklahoma, Florida, Kiowa, Kansas, and Odessa, Texas. She was a life member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and a member of the San Angelo Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of San Angelo, Texas. After retirement she enjoyed managing her cotton farms in Oklahoma and was proud of the fact that the Claiborne Farm was recognized as an Oklahoma Centennial Farm.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Luther K. Guffy; her parents; three brothers, J.B. Claiborne, James Frank Claiborne, and George Rodney Claiborne; two sisters, Vesta Faye Burns and Edna Pearl Barefoot.

She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie E. Bolt and husband Richard of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Melba Dean Devore of Kingman, Ariz.; numerous nieces and nephews, and family members.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Thursday at Johnson’s Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday at Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kevin McSpadden officiating. A reception will follow the service.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus. The family will be present from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday with burial to follow at 1 p.m. at Altus Cemetery, with the Rev. Kevin Baker officiating.
