The first Altus city wide cleanup event is set for tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 23, from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at the Altus Rotary Center on E. Cypress across from the Altus High School Cafeteria between 8 and 9 a.m. Please come inside the building to register and pick up your trash bags.

Volunteer groups are already assigned to clean up certain major thoroughfares in Altus, but the Clean Up Altus Action Group is asking for as much help as possible. Shown here are Angela Ybarra, Marie Garrison, Jessica Proffitt, Freddy Perez, and Mike Weber get ready for Saturday’s clean up, outside of the Chamber of Commerce.

This is the first phase of four to Clean Up Altus, by cleaning up trash on the major roads, including Main Street, Broadway, Falcon Rd, Tamarack Rd, Veteran’s Drive, Park Lane, and Ridgecrest Rd.

Volunteers are expected to return to the Rotary Center with their garbage bags to dispose of in the roll off dumpsters.

The entire Clean Up event will be over by 12 noon. McDonald’s of Altus will provide coupons to all volunteers.

The Clean Up Action Group would like to thank McDonalds of Altus for donating coupons, the City of Altus for supplying vests and pokers. Please wear something bright, and bring gloves to protect your hands.

All businesses along the major thoroughfares have been notified of the clean-up effort and are asked to clean up areas in front, back and sides if their building.

Goals of this group include keeping Altus looking as good as possible and keeping trash out of the main waterways in the area.

This is a cooperative effort between the Altus Chamber of Commerce, City of Altus, Main Street Altus, Altus AFB, Altus Rotary, Altus Lions, Altus Kiwanis Club, Jackson County Health Action Team, Nutrition and Fitness Task Force, Western Oklahoma State College, Southwest Technology Center , Altus Realtors, OSU Extension Center – 4H Clubs, Boy Scouts, area churches, McDonald’s, Altus High School National Honor Society, and hopefully many other businesses. The Altus Times, KEYB and KWHW radio stations are also helping and many other individuals. Anyone interested in joining this effort is asked to call the Altus Chamber of Commerce at 580-482-0210 to sign up.
