Next Saturday, June 14, at the Altus AFB Windy Trails Golf Course, golfers will tee off for the 1st Annual Rick Vassella Memorial Golf Tournament. All proceeds will go toward a scholarship at Western Oklahoma State College.
Rick was an avid golfer who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in June 2012. The subsequent surgery affected his left leg and arm rendering him unable to play the game he dearly loved. Rick inherited his love for the game from his Dad, Dominic Vassella, and the legacy continued with his son, Michael, who received a scholarship to play collegiate golf at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. Prior to his illness, Rick spent his free time golfing, restoring classic muscle cars and motorcycle riding. Rick fought hard, but sadly, he lost his battle with cancer and passed away on January 9, 2014.
Rick graduated from Altus High School in 1977, and attended Western Oklahoma State College. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State College and a Masters Degree from Webster University. In 1988, Rick began a Civil Service career at Altus AFB and was the Chief of Wing Operations Plans when his illness resulted in his medical retirement. In addition to his career with the Air Force, he was also an Adjunct Professor at the Altus AFB campuses of Southern Colorado and Wayland Baptist Universities.
The two-person team scramble will start Saturday morning, June 14, at 9 a.m. A Hole in One contest will be sponsored by Gina and John Tolbert and lunch provided by the Holder Brothers Meat Co. Prizes will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place teams. For more information and to register your team, call the Windy Trails Golf Course at (580) 481-7207.
