Katelynn and Kriston Shumaker, graduates of Navajo High School, Western freshmen and members of the Pioneer women’s basketball team are the recipients of the “The Ewell and Lola Russell Memorial Scholarship.” Katelynn majors in Health, P.E. and Recreation, is a Western Ambassador and Student Senate Secretary. Kriston majors in Liberal Arts and will be inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society this semester. They are the daughters of Raylon and Michelle Shumaker of Eldorado.
The scholarship was initiated and funded by Dr. Donald Bonner and his wife, Christina, of Duncan, in memory of Ewell and Lola Russell. The gift is also a tribute to the Russell’s daughter, Alceon Jones and her husband Gary, for continuing a legacy of support for area youth.
The $1000, one-time gift is funded to honor the Russell’s outstanding contribution to the youth of Jackson County. Both were generous in their support for local young athletes, their families and school athletic programs. Their support took the form of gifts, loans, jobs and networking help to connect youth with community leaders. The Russell’s anonymously contributed food and refreshments during games and funding for athletic equipment. They faithfully attended games and took young athletes and their parents to games and tournaments.
After Ewell and Lola married in 1927, they spent their working lives side-by-side in the fields. They were active farmers throughout Jackson County. They were partners in work and in their devotion to helping area youth. In addition, the Russell’s served in significant school and church roles in their community.
