Fans were treated to a high-scoring affair Tuesday as Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers outscored Vernon 19-9 in seven innings.

Hitters on both sides were strong at the plate as the teams combined for 32 hits, including 15 extra base hits.

The biggest inning for Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers was the first. Vernon had no answer as Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers scored 10 runs.

Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers hammered Vernon pitching as eight hitters had a field day, combining for 18 hits, 15 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Home runs for Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers came when Tony Nuñez homered in the first inning, Jose Fortuna homered in the first inning, Cesar Figuereo homered in the first inning, Alnardo Rodriguez homered in the first inning, and Justin Ellison homered in the second inning.

Four relief pitchers made sure the win didn’t fall through the cracks for Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers. Anthony Alicky faced six batters in relief, while Ruddy Estrella managed to record five outs to aid the victory.

The top of the first saw Vernon take an early lead, 3-0. Clubb singled to ignite Vernon’s offense. Harris singled, plating Filoteo. More runs came home for Vernon when Clubb and Harris scored on a two-run double by McCarthy.

Five runs in the top of the fourth helped Vernon close its deficit to 13-8. An RBI single by Garcia, a three-run home run by Filoteo, and an RBI single by McCarthy gave Vernon life. But, Ruddy got Dunbar to fly out to end the inning.

Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers survived Vernon’s surge and put up five runs of its own in the fourth. Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers scored on an RBI single by Jose, an error, a two-run single by Alex Lugo, and an error.

Western is 6-0 on the season.
