Altus High School swimming coach Linda Wiginton was selected as the Southwest Sectional Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
Each year this organization recognizes outstanding coaches throughout the United States and the members associations via the NFHS Coaches Award programs. The staff at the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Athletic Activities Association (OSAAA) selected Wiginton to represent Oklahoma as Coach of the Year in Oklahoma Boys Swimming for 2013. Her application was then evaluated by the NFHS. The Southwest Section section includes the states of Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
This year is Wiginton’s 32nd year as head coach at AHS. Her career record is 979-269-6. Her 2010 boys team were state champions and runnersup in 2011. Last year’s team for both girls and boys made the top 30 in the nation for public school with 201-1400 students voted n by the National Interscholastic Swimming Assocation (NISC). Wiginton has coached several individual state championship in the 50 freestyle.
Wiginton said, “I am continually blessed with swimmers with great attitudes, supporting parents, and two great assistant coaches , Michael Shive and J.D. Falkner. They all contribute to make me look good.”
