ELGIN – The Altus Junior High 7th grade girls put up a good fight Monday night against the Elgin Lady Owls but found themselves coming up short in a 42-19 loss.

The game was much closer than the score would indicate.

Altus used a tough defense to hold the Lady Owls to four points in the first quarter. Altus went into the second frame down only 4-2.

Missed lay-ups and free throws doomed the Lady Dawgs in the second frame and Elgin took advantage, outscoring the Lady Dawgs 19-7 to take a 23-9 halftime lead.

Altus was able to cut into the Elgin lead midway through the third quarter at 25-17 but Elgin scored the last six points of the quarter to take a 31-17 edge heading into the final quarter.

The Lady Owls were able to outscore Altus 11-2 in that final frame to take the victory.

Altus was led by Jordan Benway, who scored 13 points.

Altus, now 3-5 on the season, will take a break for Christmas and return to the court on January 6 when they travel to always tough Anadarko.
