Bulldogs return home to play OC Southeast
It’s getting close to a must win situation for the Altus High Bulldogs to reach the Class 5A state playoffs.
Altus enters its game with Oklahoma City Southeast with 1-2 record in the district and 1-5 overall. The Bulldogs host the Spartans in a Thursday game at Hightower Memorial Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
It is likely the Bulldogs would have to run the table to get into the playoffs. But it is possible even with the four game sweep Altus would not get into the playoffs. If Altus would win their final four games they would be 5-2 in the district which normally would be enough to get them in. However, there is a scenario where that could produce a five way tie with five teams at 5-2. That is highly unlikely.
If the Bulldogs would win three of four they might make the playoffs. However, because of a small point margin victory over Chickasha three weeks ago, Altus would not be in a good spot with the tiebreaker system.
Altus High School Head Coach Chad Stone is staying away from playoff talk.
“We’re talking one game at a time,” Stone said. “I know that’s an old coaching cliche’, everyone says that. It’s about us getting better, us getting more physical, and us taking care the football on ever single play. If we do those things we will have the opportunity in all four those games. We have to focus on getting the little things right and if we do that, I think everything may fall into place for the last three weeks, as far as leadership, as for as chemistry, the things we have been missing.”
Altus will be favored to win two of the four remaining games, this week against Southeast and the final week at Oklahoma City Capitol Hill. They will be underdogs against Lawton MacArthur and Ardmore.
Southeast comes to town with a spread offense. There main weapon is Denzell Williams a 6-1 159 pound running back who Stone said is speedy and elusive.
Up front the Spartans are big, averaging 246 pounds on both sides of the ball.
Defensively the Spartans use a 4-4 alignment. You can look for Southeast to crowd the line of scrimmage and try to force the Bulldogs to throw.
Altus fans can look for the Bulldogs pound the ball with Taven Birdow who is the leading rusher on the season with 857 yards and a 6.6 yard per attempt average.
Stone said he would like to see the passing shored up in this game. The Bulldogs are averaging only 3.5 per attempt.
“We’ve rev-ed up practice with competition and things like that,” Stone said. We’ve told them (the players) so every position is open.
Bulldogs notes: Both Wavin Yada and Montana Frailey have recovered from head injuries suffered at Del City and both are expect to play.
This will mark the third Thursday night game the Bulldogs will play. It is on Thursday because it is fall break week. Altus will have one more Thursday game, the last week of the season against Capitol Hill.
