Bulldogs open district play at Chickasha
After an extremely tough schedule in the Altus High Bulldogs are 0-3 on the season.
They try to rectify that Friday night when they travel to Chickasha for a 7:30 p.m. district opener on Friday.
Altus High Head Coach Chad Stone says he is ready to wipe the slate clean. “I told them (the players after last Friday’s Lawton High game we’re not 0-3 were are 0-0.”
It appears the Altus-Chickasha game appears to be a good matchup. The Chicks are 2-1 on the season but it’s obvious they have not played as difficult schedule. They scored late last week to earn a 25-24 victory over Cache last week. They also own a victory over El Reno in the second game of the season. But in their season opener they gave up 70 points to Anadarko, the top ranked Class 4A team.
Altus has losses to Vernon, Texas, Lawton Eisenhower and Lawton High.
Chickasha enters the game with a strong ground game triggered by quarterback Cade Morris who ran for 167 yards on 16 carries while scoring four touchdowns in their spread offense which features the zone read play.
It could be a battle of strengths when the two clubs get together. Chickasha’s 4-4 defense shut down Cache’s run game last week and offensively Altus’ strength is the run game.
Sophomore running back Taven Birdow is the ringleader for the Bulldogs. He has rushed for 423 yards on 61 carries for a 7.0 average.
T. J. McGill gives the Bulldogs a good one-two punch. McGill has run for 195 yards on 38 carries with a 5.1 average.
Junior quarterback Tanner Cross has completed 15 of 40 passes for 117 yards.
Josue Martinez leads the team in receptions with 11 catches for 92 yards.
Other district games has Lawton MacArthur traveling to Del City. Duncan hosting Oklahoma City Capitol Hill and Oklahoma City Southeast going to Ardmore.
Game notes: It’s homecoming for the Chicks. They will take up the entire halftime for the home coming ceremonies.
Therefore That Altus Band will perform until after the game.
