In 1990, the Western Oklahoma State College Foundation, Inc. established a scholarship endowment in memory of Jim Holland, long time college faculty member and southwest Oklahoma educator. Jim’s untimely death created a desire for many friends and family members to make contributions to the Western Oklahoma State College Foundation in his memory.
With the support of Jim’s friends and family, the WOSC Foundation, Inc. held the 1st Jim Holland Memorial Golf Tournament in November of 1991 with the goal of raising $10,000. Each year since, the tradition has continued and after 22 years of fellowship and golf the funds raised by the tournament have grown the scholarship endowment total to over $200,000.
Over the past 22 years, more than $100,000 in scholarships have been awarded to students in memory of Jim Holland. Over 2500 golfers have enjoyed fellowship and friendly competition, some playing each and every year. Over 500 energetic volunteers have worked to prepare the course, work the tournament, bake cookies, serve food and register teams. Approximately 700 sponsors have generously supported the tournament, many continuing to sponsor each of those 22 years. Top golfers have also taken home 132 highly coveted trophies and bragging rights over the life of the tournament.
The 23rd Annual Jim Holland Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10. A four-person scramble shotgun start will begin at 8 a.m. at the Greens of Altus.
