A fire Saturday afternoon destroyed a house on Route 3 in Jersey County.

The QEM Fire Department responded to the fire in the 26000 block of Route 3 at 4:16 p.m., QEM Chief Gerry New said. Four fire departments, including Fieldon, Brighton and Godfrey, and 26 firefighters got the fire under control at about 10 p.m.

New said the cause of the fire is undetermined and the house is a total loss.

The Red Cross provided help for the houses’s two inhabitants, who were shopping when the fire started. New said he wasn’t sure who first called in the fire.

There were no injuries, although New said there may have been animals in the house.
