Jury duty scam hits the area

Tillman County Sheriff Bobby Whittington reports his office has received multiple calls in reference to a telephone scam which is sweeping across Southwest Oklahoma.
The caller identifies himself as the Sheriff of Tillman County or some other representative with the Sheriff’s Department. He then states the person has missed an important court date, most often jury duty, and to avoid arrest, the person must pay anywhere from $350 to $500, and instructs them to put the money on a Green Dot card that can purchased at such stores as Wal-Mart or Walgreens.
One local woman who received one of the calls said that the man told her he was a Sergeant with the Tillman County Sheriff’s Office, and that she had not reported for jury duty, and that an arrest warrant was being issued for her arrest. If she did not pay the money, she would picked up and jailed.
“I told him I had never gotten a notice about having jury duty, and he told me it didn’t matter if I had received it or not, and if I didn’t pay the money, I would be arrested,” said the woman. “My husband got on the phone and started asking him a lot of questions. The man even put his ‘supervisor’ on the phone.”
The woman said they contacted the police and Sheriff’s office and was told it was a scam.
Sherriff Whittington requests anyone receiving a call similar to try and get as much information as possible from the caller. Important details to note include: voice, male or female, accent, specific terminology used, background noises and caller ID for the phone number.
Sheriff Whittington states his office will never contact a person by phone if he has a warrant for an arrest.
It was verified that at least one person fell for the scam. A resident of Marlow in Stephens County was recently scammed out of $350 from such an incident.
Sheriff Whittington requests citizens contact the sheriff’s department at 580-335-3013 immediately if they receive one of these calls.
