Car seats and booster seats are life saving devices that unfortunately are used incorrectly far more often than most people know. Many parents go to great lengths to protect their children from harm, and taking steps to ensure their protection while riding in vehicles is no exception; however, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated one in seven misuse car seats in a way that may increase the risk of child injury in the event of a crash.

Altus Fire/Rescue Department is hosting a Child Passenger Safety Technician course through 4 p.m. today. The course combines classroom instruction and hands-on car seat installation along with a community safety check-up event. “Having additional Certified Technicians in rural Oklahoma will enhance child passenger safety”, explains Fire Chief Jerry Abbott. “More car seats will be distributed and installed correctly to ensure the future of tomorrow is buckled in safely!”

The time you invest in your child’s safety could save a life. Invest in your child’s safety; buckle everybody on every trip! Abbott says, “Altus Fire/Rescue needs your help in being proactive and playing a part in reducing injury and death before the motor vehicle accidents we will respond to”. Have your child safety seat checked Friday, January 24th from 2pm-4pm at the Altus Fire Department station 2, 1915 N. Main (next to Smileys). Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will inspect car seats for correct installation, placement, seat type, and harness positioning for free. Safe Kids Oklahoma will have a limited number of car seats available for eligible families, while supplies last at a reduced cost of only $10! Eligible participants must provide proof of government aid in order to receive a car seat. For more information contact Brandi at 580-481-3517.
