Edna Douglas and Mission On Wheels was recently named the winner in the Altus Times’ MyOwn Community Service Partner Campaign. Douglas won $2,500 in free donated advertising to support her charitable efforts for 12 months.

The contest was open to all local charity or community groups, with an IRS designation, whose works and community contributions are open to all without regards to race, color, or creed.

After nominations were received, the community overwhelmingly voted for Mission On Wheels as the organization that they felt should win the promotion. Mission on Wheels, organized and started by Edna Douglas, provides clothes and other necessities to those in need, completely free of charge. She does this through weekly giveaways of donated items at their 213 W. Walnut location, and annual events such as back-to-school backpacks filled with school supplies, and free tuxedos and dresses for those needing them for prom.

“I feel truly blessed,” said Douglas. “This prize will help us to get the word out to the public about what we are doing, and all the things we would like to do for others in our community.” Douglas said that with an expanded spotlight on their efforts, that they hope to be able to expand their operations in the future.
