The Jackson County Commissioners authorized the cremation of a deceased Altus resident, and considered other items on the agenda, during their regular meeting held on Monday, July 28, in the Commissioners’ Office of the Jackson County Courthouse. Following the meeting, area emergency response agencies gave a brief presentation showing appreciation to the County Commissioners for their support for emergency services.
During the meeting, Commissioners authorized to have resident Justine Morehouse, age 74, whose body was unclaimed at the Oklahoma City Medical Examiner’s Office after her death on May 16, 2013. As no family members had claimed the body, Jackson County became obligated to handle her remains per Oklahoma statutes. Commissioners then authorized Lowell-Tims Funeral Home to transport the body from the Oklahoma City Medical Examiner’s office to Altus and to perform cremation services for the consideration of $200.
During the meeting, County Treasurer Renee Howard informed the Commissioners that $612 in property taxes for FY 2014-15 are delinquent for the house owned by Morehouse at 1428 Concord Lane. In addition, Howard informed that Morehouse has a cemetery plot already purchased and paid for.
Also during the meeting, Commissioners approved last meeting’s minutes, reports, and officer reports.
District 1 Commissioner Marty Clinton reported that road workers have begun construction on the Navajo School Road Project (CR 210), to focus on a 3 mile stretch of road from CR 157 to Highway 19 that requires major improvement. On April 21, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation awarded the contractor bid to Sewell Brothers Construction Inc., of Cordell, for $2,700,029.
Commissioners then approved blanket purchase orders for the District Drug Court, County Clerk’s Office, Assessors’ Office, Highway Department, and the Sheriff’s Department.
Appropriations approved for the month of July include the Alcoholic Beverage Tax account for $8,448.04, Mortgage Certification Fees, Drug Court for $8,076, County Treasure’s Resale Property for $126.98, Law Library $1252.03, Jackson County Health Department $119.97, Highway Department $206,301.85, Highway Dept. CBRI 103 for $20.61, Highway Dept. CBRI 105 for $29,715.10, County General $873.85, Sheriff’s Service Fee for $36,161.67, and Sheriff Contract Prisoners for $13880.42.
Commissioners also approved a bid offer of $380.35 for a Commissioners’ Sale by Jackson County Treasurer, Renee Howard on property acquired at resale at 612 W. Liveoak.
After new business and approval of claims the meeting adjourned.
After the meeting, Commissioners were presented a frame shadowbox with a group photograph of Jackson County EMS, Altus Fire Department, and Air Evac Lifeteam, encompassing emergency responders who serve the local area.
“This is to show appreciation to the County Commissioners and just saying ‘thank you for supporting Air Evac Life Team in the area of Jackson County and the surrounding area,” Air Evac Lifeteam Program Director Kelly Dillon said on Monday. “We presented a shadowbox that gives the picture of the Altus Fire Department and Jackson County EMS that shows the partnership we have to help the community and the citizens when they are in need.”
