Gilmer Capps, WOSC Board of Regents Chair presented a certificate of recognition to Western freshman Kennedy Gilbert, of Tipton, for her status as a 2013 Gates Millennial Scholar. Kennedy is joined by her parents Todd and Cindy Gilbert. The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects talented students annually to receive a good through graduation scholarship to use at any U.S. located, accredited college or university of their choice. Gilbert is one of 1000 students in the U.S. who was selected from over 54,000 applicants and 1 of 56 in the state of Oklahoma to be a Gates Scholar. GMS records indicate that she is also the first Western student to receive the scholarship. Kennedy’s sister, Adlen and grandparents Laniel and Nelda Gilbert were also present for her recognition.
Gilbert intends to complete her education with a Doctor of Dental Surgery. Once she completes her DDS, Gilbert wants to take missions trips and provide dental care to children in need. Notably, GMS Scholars who pursue studies in the fields of Computer Science , Education, Engineering, Library Science, Mathematics, Public Health or Science may be eligible for GMS fellowship funding for their education through the master’s and doctoral levels.
