The annual Giddy-Up Gala is the place to be on Friday, Aug. 23. This event is held annually in conjunction with the Great Plains Stampede Rodeo. This year those attending will have the opportunity to enjoy a southwest style barbeque dinner, an outstanding local vocalist and a terrific dance team; as well as listen or dance to great western swing and country barn dance music before attending the rodeo later in the evening. Partial funding for this event is provided by the Oklahoma Arts Council.

Vocalist and Miss Oklahoma International 2013 Mackenzie Hazel Hazel, will perform at the barbeque dinner and concert, along with Les Gilliam, “The Oklahoma Balladeer” and his Silver Lake Band. Hazel is the 23-year-old daughter of Tori and Melvin Hazel. She grew up in Altus, but currently resides in Chickasha while attending the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) in pursuit of Elementary Education degree. She is a member of the First Baptist Church in Altus, OK and enjoys volunteering at various city events. She currently holds the title of Miss Oklahoma International 2013 and promotes her platform of Parkinson’s Disease Awareness. Her ultimate goal is to perform and entertain others and to later teach in an elementary or middle school setting.

The Double Take Cloggers will also perform at the Giddy-Up Gala. They are under the guidance and coaching of instructors Amy Abernathy and Jill Abernathy. This dance team puts on a high-intensity, toe-tapping, foot-stomping show every time they perform and the crowd loves it.

Les Gilliam and the Silver Lake Band’s concerts of cowboy, western swing, and country barn dance music always include fascinating stories about the songs and the artists who performed them. Their country dances feature great western swing music and fun activities for the audience. The band always includes original songs and humorous material, adding a touch of nostalgia, good old fashion patriotism and family fun. For the past few years, Les has performed over 100 shows per year and has been described as the perfect diplomat for western music.

The delicious barbeque brisket dinner and homemade desserts will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the entertainment also begins at that time. The concert will end in time for everyone to attend the rodeo activities. Tickets for the dinner and performances are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets are available from the Chamber of Commerce (482-0210) and from SAHC Board members; or call the SAHC office (477-1616) and leave a message requesting tickets.
