The Western Oklahoma State College Inc. announced the final documentation completed for the establishment of the Velma Shields Robison Scholarship Endowment.
The scholarship endowment has been established to honor the memory of the late Velma Shields Robison, former loyal employee of WOSC.
Robison worked from 1985 to 1996 in the aviation program and the early childhood development program. The endowment is designed to benefit students enrolled in either of the programs. Initial funds for the Velma Shields Robison Scholarship Endowment were presented on December 12, 2013, with subsequent funds presented on November 18, 2014, in memory of Robison by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Bayers and Jim Bayers of Altus.
Robison, 88, a lifetime resident of Altus passed away February 5, 2013, in Altus. She was born January 10, 1925, in Altus to Clarence Shields Sr. and Ola Simpson Shields. On June 11, 1944, she married Guy Robison in Altus. He preceded her in death on February 11, 1978, and to their marriage they had five children: Patricia, Rhana, Kathy, Kevin and Mark.
Velma Robison took great pride in being a homemaker for her family. She worked diligently as a secretary at WOSC and to make sure all details of the two departments were addressed, and she took great pride in assisting with the activities of the Pionair Flying Club and events sponsored for the children involved with the early childhood development program.
She considered WOSC an extension of her family and never failed to attend an event at the college for which she received an invitation, both during her employment and after her retirement.
She expressed her love for the WOSC family through her commitment and dedication of support. Robison was a faithful member of the Altus First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. In addition to being a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she found time to enjoy her Silver Bells Dance group, grow flowers, play bridge and read. People in the community knew spring was coming when they saw her riding her bicycle. A woman small in stature, she had a big heart and will always be remembered for the twinkle in her eyes, for her warm smile and for her gentle spirit. The intent of this endowment is to provide a perpetual reminder of Velma Robison and her love for the students she served.
