According to Child Nutrition Director Sabina Garrett, Altus Public Schools has completed the “Annual Wellness Policy (#200-065) Review” for School Year 2014-15. This assessment was accomplished by stakeholders composed of community partners, parents, a Board of Education representative and district staff. The assessment gauged district progress toward reaching health, nutrition and physical activity goals and will provide a roadmap for current year initiatives to move our students and staff toward a healthier school environment and improved student curriculum.
The Wellness Policy Assessment for 2014-15 found progress in school nutrition education, nutritional menu planning , and physical activity, both in and outside of the classroom. Our future goals include but are not limited to growth of site wellness activities, building a stronger Wellness Committee and more effective measuring/monitoring of physical education curriculum updates. We will also seek greater parental involvement and continued collaboration with our Community Partners to expand the nutrition education component.
The APS Wellness Policy is an active living document at every school site by Principals and staff. We invite all community members and parents to review this APS policy and our 2014-15 annual assessment review summary. We would appreciate your feedback to help us continue down the path toward student wellness in an effort to reduce childhood obesity and promote healthy living for our children. The APS Wellness Policy is posted at the APS District Website under Child Nutrition Program web link (www.altusps.com).
