Since Coach Nick Williams’ arrival 12 years ago, the Altus Bulldog wrestling team has won nine consecutive district titles, has earned seven top-four finishes in the state tournament and has produced 16 individual state champions — an incredible accomplishment given Oklahoma’s reputation in wrestling history.

Williams has an impressive cast this coming season.

Senior Gage Gomez is a two-time state runner-up, senior Keegan Pride was third at state earlier this year and a state runner-up in 2015, senior Austin Baldwin was a 2014 state competitor, and senior Kamron Canchola was fourth in state earlier this year.

In addition, the Bulldogs return seniors Derek Baumgardner, Josue Arroyo and Omar Pollard.

Williams also has 2016 Cadet All-American Cabe Dickerson who is a freshman this year and promises to have many years of outstanding wrestling ahead of him.

Although the Bulldogs compete close to home, being this good requires the wrestlers to attend some of the most competitive tournaments in the nation to gain valuable experience and figure out where they stand against the best high school wrestlers in the United States.

During Christmas break, Williams and his Bulldogs will be traveling to Louisiana and competing in the Deep South Bayou Duals, but traveling this distance costs money. So they are asking for help from the public.

The Altus Bulldog Wrestling Booster club is hitting the greens to do that.

The team is holding its eighth annual golf tournament slated for 1 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Greens of Altus golf course, 20650 U.S. 62 in Altus. The event will feature a two-man scramble format and a full 18 holes with a shotgun start. Prizes are available for the golfer with the longest drive and closest shot to the hole.

The first place team will receive $250, second place will receive $150, and third place will receive $100. To play, all one has to do is pay a $50-per-player fee and show up.

All proceeds will go towards helping the junior high school and high school wrestling programs. The money will be used to keep the teams competitive by giving them the best opportunities to succeed.
