Last month, the Altus City Council approved a contract for bulk trash removal service between the sanitation department and JB’s Removal and Cleanup Service of Willow.
Since the contract was approved, the sanitation department has created a feature on the city website where the progress of bulk trash removal can be checked by residents. Complete with a map of Altus split into 12 numbered zones and dated postings, letting the public know where removal services are taking place, residents can see how the new contract is affecting sanitation services.
Trash removal began in Zone 1 in August and will progress through all 12 zones in numerical order.
Though the removal service is not on an on-call basis, the public can expect to wait no longer than 60 days for bulk trash to be removed. For immediate removal, the sanitation department officials encourage residents to take bulk trash to the landfill.
Residents can deposit up to 1,500 pounds of waste at the landfill at no cost by showing a utility bill and personal identification as proof of residence. There are fees for waste exceeding 1,500 pounds and for tires taken to the landfill.
Bulk trash removal began Aug. 19, and since then, the removal service has worked up to Zone 3, stretching from South Main Street to South Park Lane and north to Broadway Street.
The purpose of the online update is to let the public know where to can expect removal services and to plan ahead for bulk trash disposal.
City workers remind residents to keep alleys cleared for sanitation, utility service and emergency vehicles. Blocked alleys may result in interruptions in trash collection and slow progress for bulk trash removal services.
These services do no include removal of litter, leaves or small branches. Residents may be required to do some light cleanup after bulk trash has been removed to maintain property. City codes require residents to keep the portion of alley behind the property to the center of the alley cleared of debris, tall grass and weeds.
The City of Altus is currently pays $85 per ton for removal to the landfill through JB’s Removal and Cleanup Services, about a $100 decrease from bids offered by similar companies from Lone Wolf, Blair and Altus in June.
