Memorial Day events for 2016 kicked off Saturday morning at the Altus City Cemetery with the Altus Air Force Base senior enlisted placing 1,400 single American flags on every military grave.

On Memorial Day people gathered at the Veteran’s World War II memorial at the Altus cemetery for a wreath-laying ceremony hosted by the local Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 4876.

The VFW, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, VFW Auxiliary and Legion Auxiliary, 97th Air Mobility Wing vice commander Air Force Col. Charles E. Ohliger, Mayor Jack Smiley, state Sen. Mike Schulz (R-Altus) and state Rep. Charles Ortega (R-Altus) joined the local military and civilian community for the remembrance service.

The memorial ceremony started with a welcome from VFW District Commander Ken Pike, the Pledge of Allegiance and the playing of Taps. Five wreaths decorated in red, white and blue were placed at the WWII monument by the respective veterans’ groups with the help of Smiley, Schulz and Ortega.

The ceremony continued at the local VFW post hall with fellowship, a complimentary lunch and guest speaker Ohliger.

Ohliger spoke on the loyalty of now-deceased service members, the strong history of the Altus Air Force Base and the many sacrifices and important roles of the United States military.

VFW Post Commander Rick Wiley thanked the Altus Air Force Base Blue Knights Honor Guard, the 97th Communication Squadron, the 97th Air Mobility Wing public affairs, the base senior enlisted group, the VFW Auxiliary, and everyone who contributed to the day.
