5 Altus High School ladies Girls State bound

The American Legion Auxiliary, of the Altus Legion Post 44, is sending five Altus High School girls to Oklahoma Girls State. The program is held once a year, for a week, at the Oklahoma University at Norman, Oklahoma.

Girls State is a nation-wide high school junior girls program of Americanism and good citizenship. It is sponsored and conducted by the state officials of each American Legion Auxiliary. It is a non-political, non-partisan program designed to enhance the love of God and Country in the youth of Oklahoma and other states.

Girls State citizens learn the duties and responsibilities of citizenship in actual participation as citizens of a mythical state. Citizens of Girls State show high moral character, leadership, and interest in government. The program requires work and study along with fun. College credit may also be earned.

From the Altus High School, the girls are Chauncy Beckner, daughter of Chauncy and Rachel Beckner, Madison Cook, daughter of Perry and Christa Cook, Emilie James, Daughter of Jimmy and Emily James, Abbigail Tucker, daughter of David and Stephanie Tucker, and Jewel Wilmany in care of Misty Martin.
