The Navajo speech and debate team wins state runner up category.

The Navajo speech and debate team recently won the state runner up in original oratory.

Sierra Rice was awarded state runner up in original oratory after four competitive rounds over three days of competition. In addition, Lane Allen and Sierra Rice also received twelfth place in policy debate, along with Shelby Wilson in Lincoln Douglas. Luke Muller received ninth place in Foreign Extemporaneous, and Lane Allen placed fifteenth.

“We are excited about the future of this program and look forward to adding additional members to our team next year,” said coach Brandi Waldroop.

Sierra, who is a senior at Navajo, will graduate with a degree of distinction in the national speech and debate association and she will receive her honor cord at the honor banquet on May 10. She will continue to work with the team next year as a judge.

All four students who qualified for the state tournament also received a new tailored suit from the Navajo School Foundation through private donations from the community. This contribution is deeply appreciated by the team and demonstrates the level of support from the community.

Now that the competition season is over the team will now concentrate on their spring production of Alice in Wonderland which will be performed at the Altus City Auditorium at 7 p.m. on May 17. For ticket information call 580-318-1599 to reserve tickets now.
