Mayor Jack Smiley signed a proclamation this week designating April 18 at “National Lineman Appreciation Day” in Altus.

The proclamation recognizes the national Lineman Appreciation Day that was started in 2013. The day was started to recognize the contributions of these brave men and women who protect the public safety and keep the power on.

It also states that linemen are the first responders of the electric family, getting power back on and making things safe for all after storms and accidents. They work 365 days a year under dangerous conditions to build, maintain and repair the electric infrastructure. The December 2015 ice storm and what the linemen did working around the clock to get power back on was noted in the proclamation.

Mayor Smiley urges the City of Altus and its residents to recognize and appreciate the men and women who keep the lights on for all of us.
