There will be a lot of fun to be had this weekend as several events are being planned in Altus. Activities on Saturday include the Rotary Club’s Bubble Soccer Tournament, the Great Plains Literacy Council’s Spelling Bee, the Sheridan’s Sunshine Foundation’s annual “Let’s Drive Out Cancer” benefit golf tournament, and the Art Affair on the Square that will feature music, wine and art.
The Sheridan’s Sunshine Foundation golf tournament has an 8 a.m. check-in with a 9 a.m. start at the Green’s of Altus Golf Course. The 4-man scramble – best ball tournament is being held to benefit childhood cancer research and was named after Sheridan Bautista who lost her battle with cancer.
There is also a longest drive and closest to the pin competition, as well as a hole-in-one contest. For more information about the tournament, contact Jim Bautista at 580-301-0906.
The “Grate” Altus Spelling Bee is held as a fundraiser to benefit the Great Plains Literacy Council services. The event is too good to “bee” true! Come and see for yourself on Saturday in the WOSC band room. Enter by the Herschal Crow Fine Arts Auditorium on the north side of the campus. The contest will “bee” full of entertainment as spelling teams compete in the contest that begins at 9 a.m.
The event has 12 spelling teams composed of adults from the military, businesses, clubs, organizations, churches, and schools. The teams who are registered to compete are: Altus
Firefighters Local #2749, Bedlam Bees, Bee Leavers, BeeOE Bombers, Bunsen & Beaker, Dad’s Shop, Fonetic Flyers, McSly, The End of the “Word” as We Know It, The Word Nerds, Thunder B’s, and Wanna Bees. With unique team names like these, the morning program will bound to be fun and enjoyable as well as informative.
The Altus Rotary Club is also excited about a new event they are bringing to Altus Saturday, which is also being held at Western Oklahoma State College. Their first annual Bubble Soccer Tournament will start at 10 a.m. on the Western Oklahoma State College campus.
Bubble Soccer is just like full contact soccer, except everyone on the team wears a large plastic bubble uniform. When the action begins look for hilarious results as players will topple and roll around the field.
The Rotary Club reminds everyone to take their lawn chairs to the Bubble Tournament. A concession stand will be available. Trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m. In case of bad weather the event will take place in the WOSC gym.
Art Affair on the Square will be held in downtown Altus on Saturday. This will be the second year for the Altus Live event that features an art show, exhibits, music and a Wine Walk.
Come out and enjoy local artisans and food vendors from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Look for free art lessons and demonstrations, displays by local artists, fun activities and a live band. In association with the event, the National Bank of Commerce Wigwam Gallery (located on the north side of the downtown Altus square) will open their doors to view the current “Feminine Strength and Beauty in Art” exhibit.
