A special City of Altus meeting/workshop was held Tuesday, March 29 on the second floor at the City Municipal Complex. The meeting was held to discuss the MAPS project, collections, expenditures and electric rates.
Present were Mayor Jack Smiley, City Council members, City of Altus department heads, Altus School Board members, representatives from the Southwest Oklahoma Community Action Group Senior Meals program and general contractors Joe D. Hall and Associates of Elk City.
Chief Financial Officer Jan Neufeld discussed electric rates and the previous financial shortfalls. Options of what direction to take was discussed. It was noted that in April, council will look at electric revenues again and decide at that time whether a customer rate charge would decline, and if a commercial rate charge would increase.
Lengthy discussion was given on the estimated dollar amounts for the proposed MAPS projects, Senior Center and the Altus Fire and Rescue – Central Fire Station.
The old Morris Foster Library located on the Altus High School campus is the possible site for the Senior Center which would create a 8,000 square foot area to include a new kitchen area with drive through, dining cafeteria and an activity lounge. The project would cost an estimated 1.5 million. It was stated that there would be a lot of repair needed to be code compliant. There were also questions on the change of costs, and deciding on what was the most economical way to go with the project.
The new Fire Department Station was also discussed. Questions on the possibility of adding more truck bay areas, storage of equipment capacity, and if there would be room for growth.
Financial numbers from Joe D. Hall, the general contractors of Elk City, gave a project budget summary price quote of $1,820,825 for the Senior Center, and three option plans for the Fire Station. Option one would be in the amount $6,938,432. Option two would be in the amount of $6,080,163, and option three would be in the amount of $5,443,283.
Items discussed will be added as agenda items for the April City Council meeting.
