Each year around Easter Robert Cantu dresses like Jesus and carries his cross around Altus. Sometimes he will set up at a public place and stay on the cross for passersby to see. “When I’m dressed as Jesus and portraying Him on the cross, I don’t talk to people because I am in prayer and focused on the message that being on the cross gives,” explained Cantu. Most times there will be someone with him that can answer questions for people who stop and ask.
This is the 15th year for Cantu to portray Jesus. He will be taking to the streets of Altus on Saturday, March 26, the day before Easter, at 10 a.m. He will leave from the courthouse parking lot in downtown Altus and will carry his cross up N. Main.
There is always a crowd that walks with Cantu on his journey portraying Jesus. Although Cantu has knee troubles, he insists on doing the yearly event because it helps remind people of the true meaning behind Easter.
“Come and join us all the way on the journey, or just part of the way,” said Cantu. Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate.
