EDC Director Brian Bush gave the board a detailed proposal for a comprehensive marketing campaign at Thursday’s regular Economic Development meeting. Bush focused on promoting Altus businesses and encouraging people in the area to “Shop Altus First.” Bush emphasized that today’s companies look for quality of life and what are they doing for the community. Three important parts of the campaign is business, job recruitments, community development, and how to assist current businesses in growth and improvement.
Board member Kevin Martin said he had received a few calls in reference to the hiring of a firm. Bush said the Marketing Firm Company of Jones PR would tailor to the needs and requests of the EDC, and the financial investment would be worth the expertise of the company. Jones has proven to increase sales by 8 percent to 10 percent, and would use local vendors, and area media to help market the campaign. Board approved the marketing proposal, and Chairman Henry said he like the idea of the firm holding our hands for a few months, and possibly a local advisory committee formed later.
Bush said Altus had submitted an application to host the next Citizen Academy Leadership Training. Other similar trainings will also be invited to Altus. City Planning Director Barbara Burleson, and Bush will work together for development ideas on underused properties within the city, and research the landowners intentions.
Board voted to authorize EDC Director Bush the authority to negotiate a dismissal of claim in the Sikorsky Lawsuit.
Also at the meeting, approval of the EDC January minutes were given, as well as the finance and treasurers report. The 2016 January budget was then presented. EDC approved to place a $100,000 bond into a CD for two years at Stockman’s Bank, a recommendation by the EDC auditor to lower the bank balance per FDIC regulations. A new checking account will also be open at the National Bank of Commerce.
Kevin Weber from the CIVICUS Group reported and updated the board on several grant application dates due at the meeting. Grants are with the USDA, safe firefighters, water grants, Main Street Altus and Mayors Design.
Present for the meeting were chariman Rick Henry, and board members Marty Clinton, Jeff Gover, Steve Allison, Daryl Latham, Jason Winters, Superintendent of Schools Roger Hill, Kevin Martin, and Interim Assistant City Manager Larry Shelton.
They will meet again on March 24, 2016.
