Altus Police captured an escapee from Mississippi shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday evening. According to Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy, the arrest came after responding to a shoplifting complaint at Walmart.
Edison Milton Watson Jr., 46, was taken into custody after he attempted to steal a television and was confronted by Walmart personnel. Altus Police later transported Watson to the Jackson County Jail. Murphy said that the suspect gave police a false name during the book in process at the jail.
“We later positively identified the suspect who escaped from the Amite County Jail in Mississippi on Feb.9,” said Murphy.
Watson had originally been arrested on a warrant for a probation violation from Hancock County Mississippi and was awaiting transport to the Mississippi Department of Corrections when he escaped.
Watson is being held at the Jackson County Jail on complaints of Grand Larceny and False Impersonation. He will also face an extradition hearing in the Jackson County District Court on the escape charge.
