Altus Police are searching for a local man wanted in connection with a drive-by shooting that was investigated last week in the 600 block of N. Julian.
Calls of shots fired were reported to the Altus Police Department shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27. The report was from an area just east of Washington Elementary School. According to Altus Public Schools Public Relations Director Amanda Davis, the school was put on lockdown as a safety precaution.
“The school was only on lockdown for a short time,” said Davis. “There was no incident at the school.”
Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy said that witnesses reported that a black male, driving a blue four-door car, was shooting a gun as he drove by in the 600 block of N. Julian.
Murphy said that the vehicle was last seen heading west on E. Hardy.
No injuries were reported, but police did discover a parked vehicle in the area had been struck by gunfire. “Bullet fragments were recovered in the trunk of that vehicle,” said Murphy.
Investigators presented the case to the Jackson County District Attorney’s office and a felony arrest warrant has been issued for Jervon Ikeem Carruthers, 21, on charges of Use of a Vehicle in Discharge of a Weapon.
Carruthers also has two outstanding arrest warrants, unrelated to the shooting, for charges of Motion to Revoke a Suspended Sentence and Motion to Accelerate a Suspended Sentence.
Carruthers is described as being a black male, 5 foot 6 inches. tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds. He may be driving a black 2007 Cadillac with the Oklahoma tag number 631EMD, or a gray 2007 Pontiac G6 with the Oklahoma tag number 774LUL.
Carruthers may be in Lawton, Oklahoma City or Vernon, Texas. He is considered to be armed and dangerous.
