Calls of shots fired were reported to the Altus Police Department shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The report was from an area just east of Washington Elementary School. According to Altus Public Schools Public Relations Director Amanda Davis, the school was put on lockdown as a safety precaution.
“The school was only on lockdown for a short time,” said Davis. “There was no incident at the school.”
Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy said that witnesses reported that a black male, driving a blue four-door car, was shooting a gun as he drove by in the 600 block of N. Julian.
Murphy said that the vehicle was last seen heading west on E. Hardy.
No injuries were reported, but police did discover a parked vehicle in the area had been struck by gunfire. “Bullet fragments were recovered in the trunk of that vehicle,” said Murphy.
No arrests have been made, and police continue their investigation.
