Vehicle stopped on highway causes accident

Three people were injured in accident 11 miles east of Altus on Sunday. According to reports from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the accident happened at approximately 9 p.m. on Jan. 24 west bound on US 62 at County Road 217.

A 2008 Dodge Ram, driven by Jesus Nevarez, 51, of Amarillo, Texas, was stopped in the west bound lanes of US 62 facing north bound when a 2010 Cadillac Escalade, driven by Elmer Pechacek, 70, of Quanah, Texas, was west bound on US 62 and struck the Nevarez vehicle.

Nevarez was transported by Jackson County EMS to Jackson County Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.

Pechacek was transported by Jackson County EMS to Jackson County Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to the OU Medical Center by Air

Evac where he was admitted in serious condition with leg and trunk internal injuries.

A passenger in the Pechacek vehicle, Jonann Pechacek, 75, of Quanah, was also transported by Jackson County EMS to Jackson County Memorial Hospital. She was later transferred to the OU Medical Center by Air Evac and admitted in critical condition with leg and trunk internal injuries.

Seat belts were equipped and in use by both vehicles. Airbags were equipped in both vehicles. Airbags deployed in the Pechacek vehicle, but not the Nevarez vehicle.

Nevarez was said to be sleepy, and cause of the collision was said to be improper stopping in a roadway.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Josh Tinsley #682 of the Jackson County detachment of Troop M., and was assisted by Lt. Steve Pothorst #172 of Troop M, Trooper Shawn Laughlin #324 of the Greer County detachment of Troop M, Trooper Lane Gossen #805 of the Kiowa County detachment of Troop M, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Jackson County EMS, Altus Fire Department, Headrick First Responders, and Air Evac.
