Several WWII Veterans will be present for the WWII Airborne Demonstration Team’s Open Hangar Day this Saturday, Jan 23 in Frederick. Confirmed veterans include: Vince Speranza HQ/3/501st/101st ABN, Chuck Ballard 505th/82nd ABN George, Wilson A Battery/321st GFAB/ 101st, ABN Paul Wilson 193rd GIR/17th ABN, and Jerry Ring 187th RCT Korea.
Open Hangar Day will be held at the historic Frederick Army Airfield section of the Frederick Municipal Airport, located southeast of Frederick. The event is free and open to the public. The World War II Airborne Demonstration Team extends a special invitation to all veterans of World War II to attend.
In addition to 1940s style military parachute jump demonstrations, historic military displays and vehicles, drinks and snacks will be available in the heated 1940s era “mess hall”.
The Winter Jump School session began on Jan. 16, and the jump phase should begin on Jan. 21 for the students.
The demonstration jumps are planned for the beginning of the day, before winds increase; plan to be on site by 8 a.m. The drop zone is located south of Frederick and west of the airport.
Throughout the day, military displays and memorabilia will be presented by the members of the WWII Airborne Demonstration Team. In addition, instructors and students from the winter jump school will be on-hand to show off their equipment and answer questions about the team. Also, staff from the U.S. Army Artillery Museum from Fort Sill will be exhibiting their WWII Jeep, and will have their 75mm-howitzer set up to fire blanks, along with other exhibits.
As a new attraction this year, members of the Camp Howze Military Vehicle Preservation Association will be exhibiting at least six vehicles from their motor pool. Vehicles will include at 1943 CCKW Compressor Truck, a 1941 M2 Half Track, a 1942 Dodge WC-52, a 1941 Plymouth Staff Car, and a 1943 Ford GPW Jeep.
