A former airman at Altus Air Force Base, Dustin Smades, 25, of Andover, Kan., has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for child abuse in the death of a 2-year-old boy. The child’s death resulted in an investigation in 2013 when officers responded to a report of a child not breathing.

Investigators say statements by Smades contradicted evidence found at the crime scene. Smades was taken into custody at Altus Air Force Base after being discharged from the Air Force, and was then arrested on three counts of child abuse by injury. He was then held at the Jackson County Jail on a $300,000 bond. Each count is a felony and could have carried a life sentence for Smades.

Court records show 25-year-old was sentenced to three, five year terms on Friday after being convicted in November in Jackson County District Court.
